Check-transparent screens

This effect works by inserting and removing partly transparent screens above the map and below the text labels. These screen are a checker-board (or other finely-repeating pattern) of transparent and white pixels.

You can achieve the same effect better with partly-transparent PNGs, as here, but some browsers do not support it.
